Is This A Man Whose Judgement We Should Trust on Anything?

It's official.

According to Anthony Weiner, he has exercised horrible judgement over the past three years or more.

Why on earth should we trust this cad about anything?

He has run roughshod over those who disagree with him, casting aspergions right and left.

He is a baldfaced liar, a slime.

Worse, we – you and I – continue to pay him a salary that puts him in the top 5% of the working population.

The state of the government today is… pitiful.

My sympathies to his new bride, who now understands that he has been doing this through their entire courtship, wedding and marriage.

Dr. Death Meets God

Jack Kervorkian assisted in untold numbers of self-murder over the decades. He fought God for much of his misguided adult life.

Last night, God won.

As He always does.

More in DC Approve of Obama than Believe in God

The latest Gallup poll reports that more residents of Washington, DC approve of the job being done by Barack Obama than in any state. Where 47% of the country approves his job performance, in the capital the number is nearly twice as great, 84.4%.
The Kingdom of Obama

In fact, according to an earlier Gallup survey more residents of our nation's capital approve of Mr. Obama than believe in God.

When we wonder why our government is so thoroughly confused, this might be the answer.

Did CNN's "Crossfire" Really Threaten to Kill Us All?

You've heard "the people who know it all" blame the Tucson rampage on conservatives' words and images. The complain that Sarah Palin's maps, Glenn Beck's words and TEA party opposition to the Obama administration caused the shooter to wake up one morning with murder in his heart and an "assault pistol" in his hand, intent on killing.

Never mind that the shooter is unquestionably unbalanced. Never mind that he apparently was motivated to destroy government rather than improve it. Never mind that he had never heard of Palin, Beck or the TEA party. The people who know it all don't need those facts. They can't be needed, they don't fit the theory.

But wait. If symbology has that effect on people, what are we to think of CNN's apparent decades-long effort to incite the entire country to mayhem and murder?

Crossfire, the very word conjures mental massacres, sweeping vistas of bodies and blood. The show's logo positively drips of stimulating those "right wing militia groups" that one is always hearing about but never see actually doing something.

Is CNN responsible then for the violence of the '80's and '90's, the building wave of political assassinations? Oh, you say, there wasn't any? How can that be?

The theory is correct; they always are. The people who know it all tell us so.

We'll just change the facts to fit the theory.

Fairy Fires Up Ferry Over Fare to Fire Fairy Fiesta

Mass. representative and home mortgage guru Barney Frank was so upset over being denied a senior citizen's discount on the ferry fare to Fire Island's gay fantasia that he caused quite a scene.

Mr. Franks' current special friend, James Ready, had requested the special ticket but was denied because Mr. Franks lacked local ID.

The photo has nothing to do with the story, other than showing Mr. Franks after an apparently relaxing visit to the White House with fellow guru and all-around fun guy Senator Chris Dodd.

Class tells, every time.

Heart-warming Late Term Abortion Success

A new mother woman in Rustburg, Virginia successfully aborted her healthy newborn shortly after its natural full-term delivery at home Monday night. Local prosecutors have declined prosecution because the woman suffocated the baby while it was still connected, making the event an abortion rather than a homicide.

“In the state of Virginia as long as the umbilical cord is attached and the placenta is still in the mother, if the baby comes out alive the mother can do whatever she wants to with that baby to kill it,“ said Investigator Tracy Emerson. “She could shoot the baby, stab the baby. As long as it’s still attached to her in some form by umbilical cord or something it’s no crime in the state of Virginia."
Apparently, this happens. According to Lynchburg's The News & Advance
The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office worked unsuccessfully to get the law changed after another baby died in the county in a similar case. Emerson said they asked two delegates and one state senator to take the issue up in the General Assembly. He says the three lawmakers refused because they felt the issue was too close to the abortion issue.

Emerson said the woman knew she was pregnant and had received prenatal care. He said the baby was full-term, due Tuesday. The medical examiner says the baby was born healthy. An autopsy is being performed. The baby’s body will then be released to the family.

Civilization Ends, Zwieback is Gone

Over the years each new arrival in our household has been an excuse to buy Zwieback toast, those little pieces of twice-baked sweet bread packaged in boxes and sold in the baby food section of the grocery store.

Excuse is the right word. I'm confident that less than 10% of our purchases made it to the intended consumer.I love Zwieback. It is, I suppose, reason 1,153 to be pro-life, to go forth and multiply. It ranks just ahead of the tax deduction.

Sadly, Kraft Foods has discontinued production of Zwieback.

Life will never be quite the same.

A Lesson Unlearned: From Luby's Cafeteria to Fort Hood

Eighteen years and two weeks ago, tragedy struck Killeen, Texas as a single vengeful killer armed with two pistols murdered 23 people and wounded 20 more customers eating lunch in Luby's Cafeteria. Last week, a different single vengeful killer armed with two pistols murdered one civilian and 12 soldiers and wounded 30 more at neighboring Ft. Hood, less than eight miles up U. S. Highway 190 from the old Luby's site.

While the two killers had nothing in common other than hatred for America, the victims shared sad similarities: victims of terrorists and victims of the law. The loss of life, the tragic losses suffered by their families, the life changing wounds of those whose lives were made worse, much worse, by laws that forced them into harm's way.

Among the dead at Luby's that day were Al and Ursula Gratia. Their daughter, Dr. Suzanna Hupp, was with them when the restaurant was attacked while they were eating. But for a Texas law that required that she leave her personal pistol outside in her car, that forbade her from carrying it into the restaurant, Dr. Hupp would have had the ability to defend her parents, herself and the others from the erratic but deadly attack by George Hennard in the second-worst shooting rampage in American history.

Dr. Hupp, reacting instinctively to the first shots, reached into her purse for her pistol.

It was not there.

Complying with Texas law of the time, she had locked her pistol in her truck parked outside. She watched in shock as her father attempted to subdue the shooter and was shot dead. She watched as Hennard repeatedly reloaded his pistols and resumed shooting. She watched as her mother, comforting her dying father, was killed.

Dr. Hupp escaped death that day and vowed to make a difference, promising herself to never again be a victim of senseless slaughter. A year later, she led the effort to change Texas law so that today more than 200,000 law-abiding Texans can protect themselves and others by lawfully carrying concealed pistols. There have been no mass shootings in Texas since… until last week.

On Thursday, Dr. Nidal Malik Hasan walked into a processing center in the middle of Ft. Hood, and opened fire against its 300 occupants with one of his two pistols, stopping to reload at least five times. Forty-two of his targets were soldiers, each of them trained with firearms. Of his 300 potential victims, dozens were experts with rifle or pistol, but in accordance with current law none of the 300 were allowed access to weapons on base, not the military weapons with which they'd soon be deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan nor their personal guns. Though knowledgeable, skilled and responsible, they were made defenseless by the law. While their leaders trust these men and women to wander the world with weapons that can level a building, they don't trust them with a handgun at home.

Interestingly, the first responder at Fort Hood was a woman armed with a pistol. Civilian police officer Kimberly Munley, who just last month finished an 80-hour course certifying her as a firearm instructor for her agency, was directing traffic when the call to respond came, "shots fired." She followed a strategy developed after the Virgina Tech shootings, another mass shooting in a state sponsored "gun free zone." Rather than waiting for backup or overwhelming responding force, Officer Munley rushed with her partner to the sound of guns. Within seconds of arrival, she shot the killer four times and stopped the death clock.

Ron Borsch, police trainer at the SEALE Regional Training Academy in Bedford, Ohio is an especially vocal proponent of training for active shooter incidents. He stresses the training that Officer Munley followed so well: get in the fight, don't wait; locate and immobilize the shooter; seconds count to save lives. This new strategy is replacing the old mindset to contain the problem while waiting for SWAT to actually take action, a disaster at Columbine, a disaster at the Amish school in Pennsylvania, a disaster at Virginia Tech.

Missed by the press, ignored by politicians, mass shootings now take place almost exclusively in "gun-free zones", areas where law abiding citizens are disarmed by force of law. The crazies have proven to be remarkably adept at attacking these soft spots. They've proven equally adept at collapsing at the very first armed resistance.

It's time we follow the Israeli model, proven effective in a nation also at war against enemies that strive for terror. Like Israel, let's arm our military, whether on base or off, on duty or not. Let's enable them to protect themselves against the further attacks which are certain to come. Let's empower them to help defend the rest of us.

Let's recognize the truth that Ron Borsch teaches: seconds count and only an immediate response will stop the death clock. At a minimum, interrupting the active shooter will slow the rate of killing and allow time for responders to arrive. In the best case, the death clock will be stopped.

Let's heed the example of the New Life Church in Arvada, Colorado, which, when threatened, called for volunteers from among its congregation to help guard its flock. Church member Jeanne Assam, a CCW holder, answered the call and later answered the challenge when a deranged visitor opened fire. Ms. Assam stopped the death clock and is credited with saving countless lives.

Let's learn the costly lessons of Killeen spread over two decades, where now the spirits of 36 unnecessarily lost lives speak to us, asking that we quit playing political games with so-called gun control and start treating the lives of our friends and neighbors as extraordinarily valuable, not to be wasted by leaders who are more afraid of the people they lead than the people they fight.

So, Does Willow Palin Now Get to Tell Letterman Jokes?

Just a few months after slandering Sarah Palin and her daughter Willow, David Letterman has publicly admitted to an inability to keep his pants zipped.

He's shown equal dexterity inappropriately flapping both ends of his anatomy, no laughing matter.

As I asked here, is David Letterman a pervert or merely starved for attention?

I watched David Letterman's Show Tonight

I haven't seen Letterman's show in years. The monologue wasn't much from a humor standpoint. Not nearly as good as Jay Leno's, I think.

Interesting, though. Letterman didn't make any "jokes" about the President's daughters.

Probably took a great deal of self-restraint.

Or, maybe he's taking his meds.

Jeez, if you can't joke about the rape of your friends daughters, what can you joke about?

Faster Than a Falling ACORN

More than 90 banks have failed so far this year. In my professional life we projected the number of closures for the full year would reach 200. We attribute the slower pace to a combination of overload and undercapitalization at the FDIC.

An interesting facet of the bank closures is the speed with which the related holding companies and non-bank affiliates shut their doors after the feds cut off the banks.

There seems to be a parallel situation developing at ACORN this week. Just days after ACORN's nominal leader, Bertha Lewis, blew off the effect of a federal cutoff as not significant, the murky mob has laid off workers and shuttered offices across the country.

Either ACORN was more dependent on federal taxpayers than it has admitted or the flood of state funding reversals has had a devastating effect on the network.

President Obama owes ACORN big time. It will be interesting to see what he does for them.

Is Jimmy Carter Still a Racist or Merely Self-Loathing of His Past?

The most off-putting traits of too many modern American leftists are their permeating sense of self-righteousness and their willingness to project onto others their own dark motivations.

  • Nancy Pelosi bemoans a lack of civility mere days after complaining about "un-American" voters protesting under color of swastikas. She suffers flashbacks to verbal slippery slopes to violence, but neglects the party and the politics of those who practice it.
  • President Obama calls for "in your face" aggressiveness but then regrets the tone of discourse that results.
  • And Jimmy Carter, easily the most unsuitable President of the last century and a national embarrassment in this one, sees only bigotry in the hearts of those who raise their voices against President Obama's calls for socialized medicine.
Was there ever a man as self-righteously supercilious as Jimmy Carter? I think not, but perhaps his obsession with racism, seeing everywhere the belittlement of blacks by whites, is fueled by the mirror more than by reality.

President Obama won the last election with a comfortable margin, a margin provided by white voters. Many of his supporters voted for him specifically because of his races. Many more, including many of those who voted against him, hoped to see his promise of a post-racial polity come true.

For Jimmy Carter to now make minor the arguments surrounding President Obama's plans for health care and the economy is demeaning to the current President. It reduces his leadership, his plans and his vision to a caricature, one unworthy of principled differences.

It represents a completely racist perspective on the part of Mr. Carter.

Perhaps it is a projection of his own guilt. According to his well-sourced and comprehensive 2003 book, A Voting Rights Odyssey: Black Enfranchisement in Georgia, by Laughlin McDonald, Director of the Voting Rights Project for the ACLU and prolific author on race, Mr. Carter was something less than a supporter of civil rights in his early career. On page 65,
White racial phobia extended even to segregating the streets. In 1956, the Sumter County Board of Education tried to halt construction of a new black elementary school, not because segregation had been held unconstitutional in Brown two years earlier, but because local white citizens had complained that the school would be "too close" to an existing white school. According to the white parents, "the children, both colored and white, would have to travel the same streets and roads in order to reach their respective schools." One member of the board, a former naval officer named Jimmy Carter who had returned to Sumter County to take up peanut farming and politics, made a motion to request the state board of education to hold up construction of the "Elementary Negro School" until a new site could be selected. The state board turned down the request because of "the staggering cost" involved in delaying construction but Carter and the other members of the local board assured the white parents that the board "would do everything in its power to minimize simultaneous traffic between white and colored students in route to and from school."
Mr. Carter, your sins are not ours. If you'd like to join the arguments on their merits, please do, and let the better ideas win. But if racial self-immolation is your only contribution, please take it elsewhere.

Jimmy Carter is easily the worst former President of my lifetime, though the contest remains open.

Is Obama snorting, or is this just a flashback?

When even The Washington Post points out the nearly complete disconnect between President Obama and reality, and urges him

Stop it with the magical realism already.
one must wonder if the President isn't engaged in a major relapse to his earlier life and if he didn't slip a 'room or two in with the coke.

Welch and Gillespie continue

Beyond pushing the "emergency" $787 billion stimulus package (even while acknowledging that the vast majority of funds would be released in 2010 and beyond), Obama signed a $410 billion omnibus spending bill and a $106 billion supplemental spending bill to cover "emergency" expenses in Iraq and Afghanistan (and, improbably, a "cash for clunkers" program). Despite pledges to achieve a "net spending cut" by targeting earmarks and wasteful spending, Obama rubber-stamped more than 9,000 earmarks and asked government agencies to trim a paltry $100 million in spending this year, 0.003 percent of the federal budget.

In the same way that Bush claimed to be cutting government even while increasing real spending by more than 70 percent, Obama seems to believe that saying one thing, while doing another, somehow makes it so. His first budget was titled "A New Era of Fiscal Responsibility," even as his own projections showed a decade's worth of historically high deficits. He vowed no new taxes on 95 percent of Americans, then jacked up cigarette taxes and indicated a willingness to consider new health-care taxes as part of his reform package. He said he didn't want to take over General Motors on the day that he took over General Motors.

Such is the extent of Obama's magical realism that he can promise to post all bills on the Internet five days before signing them, serially break that promise and then, when announcing that he wouldn't even try anymore, have a spokesman present the move as yet another example of "providing the American people more transparency in government."

He's a manic speaker, needful of public approbation seemingly every moment of every day. That others in other lands diss him even in the midst of his bowing and scraping passes beneath his notice. That our enemies threaten him–and us–without hesitation is both humiliating and, more importantly, unsettling.

His selection of staff, even of judicial nominees, reflects poorly on his judgment and the processes he uses to recruit prospects.

He's a polished loser, a Jimmy Carter on a high.

How about a month or two in a Trappist monastery, Mr. President, or Buddhist, or even Schick Shadel. Take a breath, calm down, rinse out.

Chappaquiddick, 40 years ago today

It was 40 years ago today that young Mary Jo Kopechne was left to drown by the "Lion of the Senate."

Is Sotomayor Racist? Maybe, but…

Is Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's first nominee to the Supreme Court, a racist? If we consider only her 2001 comment that women of her race are uniquely qualified by their race to judge others, then certainly so. It describes an inherently racist view. Her long-time membership of an overtly racist organization that actively supports segregation and superiority, La Raza ("The Race"), increases the concern. Certainly, a white male caught in the same positions would be instantly disqualified as a nominee, properly so.

I confess a certain perverse pleasure imagining the reaction from my leftist friends if Clarence Thomas, a man with a much more impressive life story, had been discovered to have said something similar prior to his nomination:

"I would hope that a wise black man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
Wow! The fireworks would have been spectacular.

Or, imagine Clarence Thomas as a member of Louis Farrakhan's equivalent to La Raza.

That said, I don't believe Ms. Sotomayor any more racist than is the typically superior liberal product of Princeton and Yale. More importantly, both for the argument over her nomination and for the future of the Court, she has not allowed her biases to tilt her decisions on racial matters. Tom Goldstein, writing on SCOTUSBLOG at Judge Sotomayor and Race, has reviewed Judge Sotomayor's complete opinion file as an appellate juror and finds no evidence of racist decisions.

Unfortunately, as so often seems the case when a class-obsessed liberal makes a selection based primarily on membership in a group, as did President Obama, Ms. Sotomayor is far, far from the most qualified choice for one of nine seats on the court. Her legal skills barely reach the unarguably low threshold set by her retiring predecessor, who until this year's performance by Justice Ginsberg held secure the position of weakest justice on the bench. She will not add to the quality of the arguments or opinions, but only, if her colleagues can be believed, to their heat.

Even Judge Sotomayor's most ardent supporters frame their enthusiasm in terms of her life story, not her performance in office. Liberal thinkers looking for an historic change agent are muted in their cheers, weighted by a sense of lost opportunity.

Neither our Constitution nor our political system assure us of only the best qualified nominee or justice. It's potluck and that a nominee is mediocre is not sufficient reason to block a President's choice.

Is Wisdom Racial, as Judge Sotomayor Says?

Supreme Court Justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor, on a riff on comments by Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg that "at the end of the day a wise old man and a wise old woman reach the same judgment," took exception with both of history's only female justices. According to Judge Sotomayor, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Perhaps, then, we could cut to the chase by asking Judge Sotomayor to rank the races and genders by the innate wisdom in the possession of each. It would then be a very simple matter to seek out potential nominees exclusively from the race and gender that ranks highest, thereby assuring us that only the very most qualified justices would be nominated and confirmed.

This approach is certain to appeal to President Obama, as a solid meld of qualification and identity politics.

The only real issue that remains: Does the wisdom inherent in a particular race change over time, so that this year's leader might be next decade's goat?

Let's ask Judge Sotomayor.

Who knew it could be as easy as that?

Looking for Empathy in All the Wrong Places

President Obama has announced his criteria for his first nomination for Justice of the Supreme Court. The "essential ingredient" for the President's approval is empathy, presumably meaning a sensitivity to the feelings of others.

Given this, the President should skip rummaging through the appellate courts, district courts, the law professoriate. As a matter of fact, he should probably avoid lawyers entirely.

Why not go right to the top? He already knows the nation's leading empath, coincidentally a good friend and political supporter. Even better for those who appreciate group politics, she's a three-for: astoundingly successful empath, woman of color, a lifetime of real experience, her own and borrowed from others.

Leftists are pressing for a game-changing leader, a justice who can compete with Scalia by building arguments that sway the entire judiciary with brilliant charisma.

Yep, Oprah's the one.

If Oprah's tied up, I'd like to suggest Christina Aguilera. She hits all the hot buttons: hispanic, female, lots of life experience, probably doesn't care much about some "abstract legal theory or footnote." Just right.
