Civilization Ends, Zwieback is Gone

Over the years each new arrival in our household has been an excuse to buy Zwieback toast, those little pieces of twice-baked sweet bread packaged in boxes and sold in the baby food section of the grocery store.

Excuse is the right word. I'm confident that less than 10% of our purchases made it to the intended consumer.I love Zwieback. It is, I suppose, reason 1,153 to be pro-life, to go forth and multiply. It ranks just ahead of the tax deduction.

Sadly, Kraft Foods has discontinued production of Zwieback.

Life will never be quite the same.

I cannot believe that Zwieback is no longer made. Is there anything that is a reasonable substitute for this? I have a family recipe for cheesecake that uses Zwieback for the crust. I am devastated! Thank You.
