Chuck Schumer Addresses Troops in Anbar: You Failed

Scroll Down for Update

Chuck Schumer, senior Senator from New York and self-described member of the Democratic leadership team in the Senate, really knows how to make friends and influence people.

This morning, in a speech on the Senate floor, he explicitly told the U. S. Marines in Anbar province that they've failed and are a part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Let me be clear. The violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge. The inability of American soldiers to protect these tribes from al-Qaeda said to these tribes, "We have to fight al-Qaeda ourselves."

It wasn't that the surge brought peace here, it was that the warlords took peace here, created a temporary peace here and that was because there was no one else there protecting. (Emphasis in original.)
Wow. I wonder if he'd dare say that while facing the Marines?

UPDATE & BUMP: Today Senator Schumer used the magic eraser to modify his comments of last week.

According to Senator Schumer's website, what he really meant to say said was
And let me be clear: the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge.

The lack of protection for these tribes from al Qaeda made it clear to these tribes, “We have to fight al Qaeda ourselves.” It wasn’t that the surge brought peace here. It was that the warlords had to create a temporary peace here on their own. And that is because there was no one else there protecting them.
Once again, what to believe? Democratic leadership, or our own lying eyes and ears?

They say that the most dangerous place in Washington, DC, which is a very dangerous place, is when you're standing between Chuck Schumer and a camera. In this case, Schumer's mouth got there ahead of his brain and now he's trying to get out of a very sticky wicket.

It really takes a "lot of courage" to bad mouth our fighting men while you are standing safely in Congress. You have to have the "highest respect" for such a yellow livered coward who would make such shameful remarks about the US military while they are in the field, dieing in the line of duty, on a mission that this country has sent them to do. It is a disgrace to have such people in our government; we need a mechanism to remove such slime from our Congress.

Funny, but haven't the Democrats been whining about the Iraqis not stepping up and solving the problems of the terrorist attacks in their own midst for themselves for some time now? Senator Jack Reed said, "The Iraqis need to know that America's commitment of over 100,000 American troops is not unlimited. Iraq's problems can only be truly solved by Iraqis themselves." Then DNC Chairman Howard Dean, in his address to the DNC Spring Meeting in 2006, said, "Democrats will ensure that 2006 is a year of transition in Iraq – the Iraqis need to take responsibility for their own future." The Democrats laid out a comprehensive strategy for Iraq in late November of 2006 that included a goal "to make clear that Iraqis need to take responsibility for the future of their country." Senator Harry Reid, in a statement following the execution of Saddam Hussein, said, "Now, the Iraqi people have an opportunity to open a new chapter, by quelling the sectarian violence and building a nation for themselves."

Now the Iraqis are stepping up and joining our Troops in the fight against al Qaeda, and Chuck-head says that such a turn of events shows that our Troops are incompetent.

I know a few Marines who would disagree with Chuck-head's assessment.

Chuckles and his pals are so invested in America's defeat in Iraq, they will say anything to make it sound like we are losing, and no amount of convincing evidence will allow them to change their tune. After all, it would give Bush the credit, and they cannot allow that to happen.
